A workshop for members of organizations involved in HIV/AIDS programs and targeting community based health workers took place from October 3-5, 2001, at the Rovuma Hotel Carlton in Mozambique organized by Religious Inter-Council of Mozambique in collaboration with Global Strategies for HIV Prevention.

There were 75 participants from South and Center Regions of Mozambique, mainly from Maputo City, Maputo, Sofala and Manica Provinces.  Members of different religious communities participated in this Conference, including Roman Catholic, Protestant, Islamic Council, Hindu, Bahai, Christian Spirit, and Messianic Church.  A number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in HIV/AIDS prevention were represented, as were governmental agencies.

His Excellency the Minister of Health presided over both the opening and closing ceremonies.  Dr. Francisco Songane represented the Prime Minister of Republic of Mozambique.  The President of the Council Against AIDS emphasized the need for the religious leaders to support efforts to elevate community moral and ethical values in order to bring about behavior change, especially in the youth.
