In 1999, under the auspices of Global Strategies for HIV Prevention, the principals of G.R.A.C.E. organized their first workshop in Nairobi,Kenya to address the HIV/AIDS crisis at the grassroots level. G.R.A.C.E. was formed in 2001 to provide a vehicle for carrying forward the established projects with in-country ownership of the program. Our intent has always been to support community-initiated, community-based, community-led education and training programs that reflect the expressed needs of the local community. To support this program, G.R.A.C.E. USA was created as the principal fundraising arm of the organization.
A unique aspect of our work is that the workshops and training sessions culminate in action plan development followed by periodic visits to each participant by the program director and coordinator. These visits provide encouragement, material and financial support for action plan implementation.
As partner organizations grow and become viewed as leaders and community resource persons, they identify skills that are key to their organizations' survival. To assist them in sustaining and expanding their work, G.R.A.C.E. links partners with funding agencies both in-country and internationally. We are also committed to supporting community building through practical skills development at the organizational level.
Grassroots Alliance for Community Education (G.R.A.C.E.) Africa is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) registered under Kenya’s NGO board in 2001 with a 501 ( c ) (3) not-for-profit fund-raising entity based in California. We are guided in our activities by our recognition of the centrality of the household and the interconnectedness between health and human rights, especially the rights of the child.
Our 100 plus Kenyan partners include CBOs, Faith Based Organizations (FBOs), and youth groups. These organizations operate as part of a network through which G.R.A.C.E. provides capacity building support in diverse areas such as leadership and governance; economic empowerment; youth empowerment; child protection; HIV prevention, care and treatment and sustainable agriculture. In addition, we provide technical and material support to enable them to improve the quality and scale of their work. We have established a niche and a proven track record in working with and empowering grassroots organizations across Kenya.
